In the latest Research Excellence Framework, 96% of Bournemouth University’s research was rated as internationally recognised or above, with 18% of that deemed to be world leading. BU’s teaching excellence has been recognised with a TEF Silver Award.
BU was also the first university in England to receive a ‘Commended’ judgement for the quality of student learning opportunities from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the highest award possible.
Bournemouth University is home to a number of Centres of Excellence, such as the National Centre for Computer Animation, graduates of which have gone on to produce Oscar-winning visual effects for the likes of Ex Machina, Inception and Interstellar.

In 2018, BU was named among the top 200 young universities globally by the Times Higher Education magazine. In the Guardian University Guide 2018, BU rose 18 places, with the table recognising BU to be fourth in the UK for the value it adds to its degrees.
BU is known for its placement offer, with every undergraduate student offered the opportunity to undertake a work placement as a part of their degree. BU is in the top five universities in the UK for the number of students currently undertaking a work placement, with 5% of all university work placements in the UK filled by a BU student. Graduate employment rates are consistently high at over 90%.
