I can’t believe I was lucky enough to become a finalist in the Rockstar Awards 2019, it was such a honor to be among such inspirational young people. I was in the ‘Young Parent’ category, one I never thought I would find myself in but life is full of surprises and it’s up to us to embrace those surprises!

I left school in twenty fifteen and attended college studying Photography but soon realised it wasn’t a career I wanted to pursue (despite leaving with a triple distinction), I then found an apprenticeship in Beauty therapy and flourished! I enjoyed working and earning money but I especially loved meeting clients and allowing them some time out of their busy lives to treat themselves to a treatment.

Also in between all of of this I was running my own blog (which I’ve now been writing for six years) It use to be mainly beauty and lifestyle based although now since having Maci it is mainly focused around the highs and lows of being a parent. Feel free to take a look! http://www.stormsblog.co.uk

A few months after qualifying my Apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy I wasn’t feeling particularly well and for some reason I decided to take a pregnancy test and that is when my life changed. When those two lines appeared my perspective on life changed and I instantly grew up, I was going to become a mummy and that was a very daunting thought especially when you’re only eighteen. But I knew it was going to be incredible.

My sickness got worse after finding out the news and it got to the point I couldn’t go to work. I knew this wasn’t normal and the doctors diagnosed me with ‘Hyperemesis Gravidarum’ (extreme sickness in pregnancy) and that was when the hell started. Most days I couldn’t even keep water down let alone food, I could be sick up to fifty/sixty times a day (yes, you read that right) and it was truly horrific. I was prescribed numerous tablets to take each day and had to have anti-sickness injections when I was at my lowest points. If you think you may be suffering from HG please take a look at the link below – https://www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/

There are also many support groups on facebook which are extremely helpful and informative.

For me this was when ‘mum guilt’ kicked in, I would see other pregnant women enjoying pregnancy and I couldn’t wait to give birth and to stop being sick. I still have moments now when I wish I would of been able to enjoy my pregnancy more but in all honesty I didn’t.

On the thirteenth of June twenty eighteen my life changed, after a few days in labor (I wouldn’t advise it!) and a delivery resulting in blood transfusions my beautiful daughter was born.

Since having Maci we have enjoyed numerous playgroups and classes, we have even set up our own one which runs once a month called ‘Little Monsters’ Personally for me playgroups have been an absolute savour and have allowed me to meet many other local mums who I now consider my very good friends. I have also set up a facebook support group to allow other local parents to discuss things and talk to others if they do not feel able to attend groups physically.

For me becoming a mum has been a rollercoaster – many people automatically judge me because I am younger than them but age doesn’t define your capability as a parent.

So, whats next?

I am wanting to spend more time working on my blog and social media platforms, I would love to do more collaborations with brands in the upcoming months!

Maci turns one in June and I honestly can’t believe I would of been her mummy for one whole year, its gone so fast and I can’t wait to share even more adventures with her in the years to come.

And finally, I want to continue to raise awareness of Hyperemesis Gravidarum and the physical and mental effect it has on women. Even to this day I am terrified of being sick… I also want to continue to help other parents who may not be confident enough to attend playgroups.

Thank you once again to everyone at The Rockstar awards for allowing me this opportunity to share my story.

Until next time,

Storm
